August 10th: Sweet relief

Written 8/10/11: 6.5 weeks pregnant

Dear E*,
So Sunday night/Monday morning, at about 1:30AM, I discovered some very light brown discharge one of the many times I got up to pee during the night (sorry to gross you out, but boundaries when it comes to talking about things like bodily fluids kinda go out the window during pregnancy).
I freaked out.
I mean, really. Like almost had a full-blown panic attack. I spent the entire rest of the night wide awake in bed, googling things like ‘brown spotting 6 weeks pregnant,’ ‘light brown discharge early pregnancy normal?’ and ‘early signs of miscarriage’ on my iPhone, until I had all but convinced myself that it was the beginning of the end. I didn’t care about the millions of stories of people who had brown spotting and were just fine; all I could think about were the few that wrote “I had that and then had a miscarriage the next day.” It was awful.
I called my doctor’s office in the morning and was told it was most likely nothing to worry about, that as long as the spotting is brown and not red, it’s probably fine. To just take it easy until my scheduled ultrasound the following afternoon.
So I called into work (thank God my boss is incredibly nice and understanding!), and spent the next 36 hours or so alternating between watching ‘Mad Men’ on Netflix, googling more spotting stories, and getting up to pee so I could obsessively check for more spotting.
By the time my ultrasound appointment rolled around yesterday afternoon, I was a mess. I was dreading the ultrasound because I had completely resigned myself to the fact that is was going to be bad news.
When we were lead back into the ultrasound room, I was shaking all over. Thankfully, the tech was super nice. She started off by saying she was sorry for our loss last year, and that she was going to walk us through and explain everything she was doing as she did the scan.
As soon as the wand went in (it was a transvaginal ultrasound, since I was only 6.5 weeks along), I started looking around the screen for any sign of a baby. For any sign of life. Before she even started doing any measurements or anything, the tech zoomed in on this little bean-shaped creature and said, “there’s the embryo, your baby.”
Then, “and we have a heartbeat.”
With those words, I breathed the biggest sigh of relief. You have a heartbeat. You’re alive. You’re really okay.
The tech went on to measure different things, letting us know everything looked perfect. She checked for a reason for the spotting, but couldn’t find any; said it was probably left over from implantation.
Before it was over, we were able to see and hear your heartbeat. 122bpm. The most beautiful, most hopeful thing I’ve heard in a very long time.
Then, we were given a few ultrasound pictures to take home. When I turned the envelope over and saw it said ‘your first baby pictures’ on it, I started to cry.
After the ultrasound, we met with my doctor. She thinks the spotting I had was probably caused by the progesterone suppositories I have been taking (they are inserted vaginally, and I guess that can cause some irritation to the cervix). She said I might get more of it, on and off, and that she knows that it’s terrifying, but to try to not worry about it. Easier said than done, right?
So all in all, it was a really good appointment, and though I’m still very scared, seeing you and your little heart beating (seriously, how does something the size of a small blueberry have a beating heart??), definitely provided a bit of sweet reassurance.
I have to be honest, I was not prepared for how difficult this whole pregnancy after loss thing is. Mentally, physically, emotionally, it’s just hard.
There’s this part of me that wants to protect myself against getting hurt again, by not letting myself get too attached to you. Thing is, no matter how hard I try, that’s just not possible. I’m already head over heels in love with you, baby.
How strange that I’m now a mother of two.
I love both of you so very much.
Xoxo,
Mom
*We decided to start calling you Baby E for now, since our boy and girl name choices both start with an E.
PS. Here’s my first belly picture, at 6 weeks, 1 day. I know there’s not much there, but you can kinda see the bloat!

August 5th: Guess who?

Written 8/5/11: 6 weeks pregnant

Dear Baby,
Guess who showed up as I was cleaning the nasty toothpaste spit off the bathroom sink (seriously, Andy, that’s gross!) this morning? My old pal, Mr. Morning Sickness! I haven’t had the pleasure of his company since around February, 2010, when I was pregnant with your big sis. I had forgotten just how much I love dry-heaving until there are tears streaming down my face.
I know this sounds sarcastic, but I actually do love it. I’ll gladly take any outward sign that there’s actually something going on inside of me. Any type of ‘proof’ that you exist.
So I am officially 6 weeks pregnant today. According to some pregnancy website, you look sort of like a mix between an alien and a seahorse (sorry, Baby, but it’s true!) and you “have grown to ⅛ inch long—about the size of one of the chocolate sprinkles on your last cupcake.”
Okay now I really want a cupcake. With lots of frosting. And extra sprinkles.
I love you Baby. Please please please keep growing and making Mama sick. See you on Tuesday!
Love,
Mom

August 4th: Scared

Written 8/4/11: 5.5 weeks pregnant

Dear Baby,
I just want it to be Tuesday already. Actually, I just want it to be Tuesday afternoon, after seeing your heartbeat on the ultrasound. I am so scared that it’s going to be bad news. I have no basis for this fear, really (I mean, my symptoms are getting worse and worse, and I don’t have any spotting or anything else to ‘worry’ about), but I know from reading blogs and hundreds of stories on Faces of Loss that being a babyloss mom does not make me immune from things like missed miscarriages, blighted ovums, and molar pregnancies.
I just want everything to be okay. I need everything to be okay.
I love you already, Baby.
Love,
Mom

Playing catch up

Dear Readers,
First of all, thank you so much for all the sweet and supportive comments on my last post. I was actually really scared to announce this new pregnancy, 1) because I know its inevitable that there are some that will feel hurt by it (I know because there was a point for me too where reading pregnancy announcements, even from fellow babyloss moms, felt like a punch in the gut), and 2) because I am so scared I'm somehow 'jinxing' it by putting it out there so publicly again. So scared that something's going to go wrong, that I'm going to have to grieve in front of the whole world again. So thank you all for being there to hold me up and cheer me on. I say it all the time, but I really can't imagine where I'd be without this blog, and without your love and support.

Anyway, like I mentioned before, I've been keeping a separate blog about this pregnancy since the end of July, but I really want to have everything in one place. So I'm going to start moving posts over here, so you can catch up on all the new baby drama :) FYI, I started referring to Baby Cook #2 as "Baby E" because both our boy name and girl name choices start with the letter E. More on that later!

I apologize in advance if a lot of what I've written so far is super whiney. I hate complaining about anything, because I am so, so happy to be given another chance at this whole motherhood thing, but I have been really, really sick. Like way sicker than last time even (and I swore then that there was no possible way it could get any worse!) I've just been having a very, very rough time. So please keep that in mind when you start thinking I've turned into an unappreciative little bitch (ha!)

Thanks again everyone! Hope you're all enjoying the long weekend.

Love,
Kristin

Here we go again...

Dear Stevie,
Notice anything new around here? Not only did Fran over at Small Bird Studios give the blog a beautiful makeover, you might also notice the new picture next to yours on the header. That's right baby girl, you are going to be a big sister! I am 10 weeks along today. I went back and forth on when I should make the announcement on the blog, and decided I could really use the support of my amazing blog friends as soon as possible. This whole experience has been really hard (way harder than I thought it would be), and I don't want to go through it alone any longer.

I have been writing about Baby Cook #2 in a secret blog since finding out, but seeing that I am incapable of keeping up with more than one blog, I am going to start writing about the experience here. I know I may lose some followers who are not at a place where they can read about pregnancy (believe me, I've been there!), but it's important to me to keep you somehow "involved" in your new brother or sister's life. I want you to be a part of this exciting and scary new chapter of our lives.

Here's the first letter I wrote to you about your little brother or sister (copied and pasted from the other blog):

I am starting this new secret blog until I go ‘public’ with the news and can start writing about it on my main blog. What’s this news, you ask? Well, I’m pregnant. That’s right, Baby, you are going to be a big sister! I’ve gone back and forth (and back and forth again) about whether or not I wanted to document this pregnancy in as much detail as I did when I was pregnant with you. I’ve decided I do. I needto. As different as it is this time around, as scared as I am, and as hard as it is to believe that I might actually get to bring home a baby at the end, I owe it to this new little life inside of me. He/she deserves to be celebrated. I’m going to try to swallow my fears and allow myself to be excited. Because if something goes wrong again (please God, just let this work out for me!), I want to be able to say that I treasured and loved every single second I had with this baby…just like I did with you.
So, here’s how it all went down. The ‘finding out’ story if you will:
We hadn’t really been ‘trying’ to get pregnant, but we weren’t being very careful, either. The plan was to just enjoy the summer and re-evaluate in the fall.
Mid-July, we left for vacation in New York. While we were on the plane ride there, I felt what I assumed were super bad PMS cramps. Some quick math determined I was due for my period that week. “Awesome,” I thought. “I just love having my period on vacation.”
As soon as we landed, I headed to the bathroom and popped in a tampon–I mean, we were going to be walking around all day and I didn’t know when I’d get another bathroom break! All week, everyday, I’d do the same thing, determined to ‘catch’ my period before it could ruin my day. But it never came. I did notice some familiar symptoms—the tiredness, the moodiness, etc–but just chalked them up to the fact that it was like 1,000 degrees outside and I was doing way more walking around than I’m used to.
Well,  we got home and the tiredness didn’t go away. Neither did the moodiness (sorry, Andy!). Finally, a few days later, when I was over a week late for my period, I decided to crack open the Dollar Tree test hiding in my bathroom closet. The little ‘test’ line came up even faster and darker than the ‘control’ line!

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic, it's all I have!
I just stood there, shocked. I didn’t know if I’d ever see those two pink lines again, and there they were. I had dreamed of this day, tried to imagine how I’d feel, for so long. And now that it was happening I just couldn’t believe it. Even after taking more tests, all of which came up VERY positive, it still didn’t sink in. When I found out I was pregnant with you, my mind went to work thinking about day care, and baby names, and nursery themes, like immediately. This time, it was things like chemical pregnancies, miscarriage, and low progesterone that filled my mind right away.
If I had to pick one word that described how I felt (and feel) this time, it would be guarded.
want to be excited and start making plans and daydreaming about bringing home a baby this March, but I’m scared to let my guard down. Afraid to get my hopes up, only to have them shattered into a million little pieces once again.
Anyway, I was able to get in to see my doctor last Friday. I had a blood draw, and we discussed the ‘gameplan’ going forward. I found myself using a lot of ‘ifs.’ IF the baby has a heartbeat. IF I make it to the second trimester. IF I make it to 37 weeks. IF things work out, my due date WOULD be March 30th. Not my due date IS March 30th; it WOULD be March 30th. You know, if the baby doesn’t die before that.
I’m trying so hard to be positive. I’m really making an effort to put ‘good vibes’ out there. To envision a happy ending. I do have a good feeling about this pregnancy, but I had a good feeling with you, too, so I don’t know if I really trust my ‘feelings’ anymore.
I got the results of my blood draw back on Monday. My HCG (the pregnancy hormone) was really high (3,500-something), and my progesterone level was good, too. I literally cried with relief.
I have my first ultrasound on Tuesday, when I’ll be 6.5 weeks. I’m hoping and praying with all my might that we see and hear a heartbeat. Maybe then it will all seem a bit more real to me. If everything looks good, I’ll be starting daily Lovenox injections (a blood thinning medication) to (hopefully) prevent the type of blood clotting that took you from me last year.
As far as how I’m feeling–physically–I’m feeling not so great. Which is great. The horrible all day sickness and puke fest I had with you hasn’t started yet, but it didn’t start last time until about 7 weeks, so it may still be in my future. I’m mainly just super tired and have really awful headaches on and off for most of the day. Sort of like a hangover that lasts all.day.long. Oh yeah, there’s the constant peeing too, which is all sorts of fun. And I almost forgot about the huge porn star boobs that are dangerously close to escaping my bra everyday…
So here I am. Pregnant. A little excited. A lot scared out of my mind. Trying to let me guard down a little more each day.
I love you, Stevie. Forever my first precious baby you’ll be.
XOXO,
Mom

I'm still here!

Dear Readers,
Just wanted to let everyone know I am still here. It's been a busy, crazy summer, and I've also been having computer issues at home, which partly explains my lack of posting. Please know I am still reading your blogs, even if I'm a horrible commenter (I am usually reading on my phone or iPad, and hate typing on both!)

Anyway, I promise I will be back soon. I might even have a new blog look and other exciting changes to unveil upon my return (oooh, the suspense is killing you, I know! haha).

Hope you're all having good, fun, peaceful summers.

Love,
Kristin

PS. Here are a few pics from our recent trip to NYC. It was so much fun!

New friends

Dear Stevie,
Wow, I am so behind and have so many things to tell you, baby girl!

One thing that has been just awesome about this summer is that I've had the opportunity to meet a bunch of my 'blog friends' in real life. I can't even put into words how wonderful it is to just be around other moms who get what it's like to lose a baby. I have a lot of wonderful, amazing friends who haven't had a loss, and while they can be great listeners, and emphasize with my pain, they can't really chime in and say, "yes, I know exactly how you feel." It was truly awesome to be with friends who can (and did!)

The first blogger friend I met up with is Melissa, Sammy's Mama. Melissa's little brother actually just married one of close friends and college roomies, Lisa, so we sort of "knew" each other through that connection as well. Melissa found out at her 20-week ultrasound that Sammy had Anencephaly, a diagnosis "incompatible with life," just days after you died. In June, she was in the Twin Cities visiting family, and we met up for lunch. I had such a great time being with her and being able to speak so freely about our babies. Then, because she is awesome and felt like doing something fun and spontaneous, we went to the local tattoo/piercing parlor, and she got her nose pierced! I really wish I would have had my camera with me to document our day (and am quite shocked that I didn't, seeing as that thing is usually attached to my body at all times!)

About a month after hanging out with Melissa, I had the chance to get together with Deanna, River's Mom, Tiffany T, JuJu's Mom, Tiffany D, Ellie's Mom, Natasha, Aiden's Mom, and Jenna, Noah's Mom.It was such a great day. I felt like I had been friends with these girls for ages, and even though all of our stories were really different (from stillbirth, to SIDS, to infant loss), the common bond we shared was so strong. Our day included a luncheon for moms who had sick children or had lost a child (we felt kind of out of place there, but got free Vera Bradley totes out of it!), painting pottery (super fun and relaxing!), and dinner at one of my favorite places in Uptown. I came home totally wiped out, but also so refreshed from such a special day with so many special mamas.

Tiffany T, Jenna, Me, Natasha, and Deanna with our new Vera Bradley totes

Of course I painted dishes for my two dogs...so spoiled I tell ya!

Deanna's sign for River's Garden

Jenna's piggybank for her rainbow baby :)

Tiffany's heart and frog for JuJu

 Tiffany's cute little dragonfly

Natasha working on her monkey :)

Yummy dinner!

So last but not least, about a week and a half ago I was in New York for vacation and was able to meet my good friend, Ann, Alyssa's Mama, who I've known pretty much since you died, as well as three other amazing new friends: Megan, Susan, and Jamila. We all met up for a professional photo shoot for an awareness campaign Faces of Loss is cooking up for the fall (wish I could tell you more, but it's gonna be awesome!).

A little behind the scenes peak of the photo shoot. I guess I can add professional model to my resume now (ha!)

Jamila, Megan, Me, Ann, and Susan in Brooklyn, NYC

Me and Ann. Miss you girl and wish we could go shopping or something together! :)

Thanks, Stevie, for bringing all these amazing new friends into my life. I wish we'd met under different circumstances, but I am so glad to have them in my life just the same.

Miss you lots.

Xoxo

Me.

Dear Readers,
I am currently participating in a 4-week online photography class, called 'Illuminate,' put on by the wonderful Beryl of Be Young Photography. It's a class specifically designed for babyloss moms, and so far I'm totally loving it. Beryl is going to be doing another Illuminate class in August, and I definitely recommend signing up if you're looking for a unique way to both process your grief and develop a new skill/passion. Anyway, I thought I would share my first assignment for the class (a self-portrait) here, so here ya go! -Kristin

Dear Stevie,
I’ve written countless letters to you over the last year and a half. Letters filled with nervousness, excitement, and unbelievable joy during the six months we had together. Letters filled with questions, anger, and incredible sadness during the weeks right after you died. And, during the last few months, letters containing a mix of pretty much every other emotion you can think of–happiness, sorrow, yearning, shame, silliness, weakness, thankfulness, jealousy, confusion, renewed strength, and even a little bit of hope thrown in the mix.
When I think of where and who I am today, I realize I can’t boil it down to one word. Or even close. These days, my state of being changes so often, sometimes I go to bed feeling like I’ve got a serious case of whiplash. In one 24-hour period, I can experience such a wide range of emotions–sometimes even at the same time. I can be totally happy, in a great mood, then I see a little girl with curly hair and big blue eyes and my heart stops. I’m sad. Then I get a funny text from a friend or one of my dogs does something silly, and I’m laughing. Then someone at work asks me when we’re going to ‘start having kids,’ and I’m super uncomfortable, that sinking feeling in my chest. One day I feel like going out all night and having fun. The next, I just want to lay in bed and watch crap on Netflix all afternoon. You just never know.
I guess I’m learning to live with the unpredictableness (is that even a word?) of my new life. The craziness that comes with losing a child. I’m learning that it’s okay to enjoy the happy feelings, and ride out the crappy ones. To not try and force myself into feeling a certain way, but to really, truly ‘live’ in each moment, each emotion, as it comes. To just be.
So this is me. Happy, sad, goofy, sexy, bored, crazy, pissed off, just alright. Me.
Stevie’s Mama.
I love you, sweet girl. Forever and always.
Xoxo,
Mom

Please?

Dear Readers,
The nonprofit organization I started, Faces of Loss, Faces of Hope, is in the running for a $25,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project! I can't even explain how awesome it would be to get this funding--we'd really be able to take the work we're doing to provide connection and support to babyloss parents to the next level. Plus, winning a national grant like this would open up a ton of opportunities to spread awareness and get our message out to a huge audience.

Anyway, to get this grant, we have to get enough votes from the community during the month of July to put us in the top 15 in our tier. Right now, we're hovering right around #32. Can you help?

The first time you vote, you have to set up an account, which takes about a minute, but after that, it seriously takes less than 30 seconds to go on and vote everyday. Obviously, this is incredibly near and dear to my heart, and I would SO appreciate it if you would vote in honor of Stevie!

Here's how:

1) Follow this link: http://pep.si/kzOEpR
2) Click the button that says ‘vote for this idea’
3) You’ll be prompted to either login or sign up for a new voting account (this just takes a few minutes and a valid email address, or you can even login using your facebook account!)
4) VOTE!
5) Repeat once a day, every day!
6) You can also ‘power vote’ for us if you have a ‘power voting code,’ found on specially marked Pepsi products.

If you vote, please comment here and let me know! You can also email info@facesofloss.com with 'I voted' in the subject line to be entered into weekly drawings for Faces merch :)
Thanks again, as always, for all your support!
Love,
Kristin

Let it be

Dear Stevie,
When I was in Puerto Rico with the girls a few weeks ago, I got a new tattoo. I feel kind of like a big hypocrite now, after all the whining I've done in my last couple posts, but here's what I got done:

I've mentioned before that 'Let it Be' by the Beatles is my favorite song. I loved it long before you came along; since I was a little girl actually. When Dad and I put together our 'Stevie's Mix' playlist, the one I'd play for you every day while you were in my belly, this is one of the few song choices we both agreed just had to be included.

Since you died, the song has taken on so much more meaning for me. In the days and weeks following your death, I literally had it on repeat. For this overly-rational, needs-to-know-why, believes-she-can-fix everything-kind-of-girl, 'let it be' was (and is) such an important message to hear. Let it be. Basic, but so powerful. Simple, but so hard to do.

Now today, over a year later, these three little words continue to speak to me. When I'm feeling anxious about the future...let it be. When I drive myself crazy thinking about all that could have been...let it be. When I'm feeling especially happy...let it be. When I'm feeling especially sad...let it be.

And then there's my favorite part in the song, which goes :

"And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be."

Thank you, Carly!

As bad as it seems, as hard as it gets, we can't forget about that sliver of light, of hope, that always remains.

Love you, baby.

Xoxo,
Mom

Testing, testing, anybody out there?

Dear Stevie,
Today was just a bad week. On Monday, I had to call in "sad" to work for the first time since last summer. I'm just getting really sick of having to do this whole "trying to enjoy my life as it is now" charade, when this isn't the life I want. It's really hard work, and I'm exhausted.

I'm also feeling really alone these days. I miss my friends. I miss my family. I even miss having a group to really connect with online. When I was pregnant with you, I had my August 2010 Babycenter moms. Then when you died I had my spring/summer 2010 babyloss moms. Now, I feel like I'm just sort of here. Everyone's moved on and I just feel lame. Super lame. Is anyone even reading this anymore? Is there anybody out there?

Sorry for the depressing letter, Stevie. I'm hoping this week is just one of the lows in this sucky rollercoaster of grief. I'm sure I'll be my normal happy self again soon. But in the meantime, I think I'm gonna grant myself permission to just feel sorry for myself. To throw myself a ragin' pity party. Hey, it is the weekend after all, right?

Miss you baby. Mama misses you so much.

Love,
Mom

Dear Universe,

Quick question for ya:

When will it be my turn to have things go right? To get my way? To be really happy again?

I'm trying to stay positive, to stay hopeful here. To be patient. I really am. But you're not making it easy for me.

I'm calling a truce here. Whatever I did to get you on my bad side, I'm sorry. Can we please make up and be friends again?

Sincerely,
Me

The little things: weekend edition

Dear Stevie,
After the worst winter in the history of Minnesota (okay, I don't know if that's completely accurate, but it sure felt like it!), it seems like summer is finally here. To celebrate, I thought I'd resurrect the old 'little things' idea, where I attempt to appreciate the little things in my life that make me smile.

Here goes nothing.

1. My dogs. Sure, I might be a bit biased, but I'm confident that I have the two cutest, most awesome dogs in the world. Whenever I tell people I have two 5-pound poodles, I feel like I have to follow it up with something like, "but they're not like most little dogs! They're not yippy or mean or annoying! They're super fun!" It's true, they are just great little dogs. Super happy. Super goofy and playful. Incredibly good with people (even little children who like to pick them up and pull on their tails). They're also really smart, which can be both good and bad. The good: Jackie's signal for being thirsty is to jump into the empty bath tub and whine--she's associated that the same stuff that comes out of the shower is the same stuff that she drinks in her bowl! The bad: they will usually only listen when treats are involved. You say 'sit' or 'come' with a piece of cheese in your hand, and they will instantly comply. Try it without a bribe, and they're like, 'meh, I don't really feel like it.' Can you really blame them?

2. Lemonade. There's just nothing better than a glass of ice cold lemonade to cool you down on lazy summer days. And thanks to Whole Foods having it on sale for 5 for $5 this weekend, we totally stocked up!

3. Girlfriends. I got to see all my college roomies last weekend at a wedding in Illinois. Even though we're all spread out now and don't see each other as often as we'd like, it's always like nothing's changed whenever we're together. This picture below makes me smile because it's so awkward and so us.

4. New sunglasses. Funny story: I was at the mall with my friend Marcus a couple weeks ago, and found my dream sunglasses. White Oakleys with these sick purple lenses. I went back and forth about whether or not I should buy them, but in the end, Marcus convinced me I deserved them as a 'celebration present' for Faces of Loss getting our 501(c)(3) status (it's so easy to rationalize, isn't it??). So anyway, I caved and bought them for myself. When I got home, I was nervous to tell Dad, thinking he might be mad that I spent money on sunglasses I really didn't need. But as soon as I took them out, he said, "are you kidding?? Those are the EXACT sunglasses I'VE been wanting for like 2 years now!" So we decided to share them. They were meant to be, I guess!

5. Quinoa. I totally feel like a hippie eating this stuff, but it's so good! And so good for you! We had a little BBQ/potluck the other night with our townhouse association neighbors and we brought this Quinoa, blackbean and agave nectar salad. Everyone kept calling it 'the crazy salad.' Like, 'have you tried the crazy salad yet? It's actually pretty good!' :)

6. Tattoos. I just love seeing our reminders of you every day. I'm so glad I chose what I chose (the tree on my wrist), and I'm so glad Dad got what he got (one of your footprints on each of his feet). They're just perfect.

7. Rainy days. It seems like they always come right when they should, when I need the weather to match my mood.

8. Humid hair. Otherwise known as 'friz head.' Once summer rolls around, I can leave the house without drying my hair and it ends up being quite curly!

9. Peach-O rings. Pretty self-explanatory. We're on a major kick lately!

10. Long walks. This one is pretty closely related to the one about my dogs, but I felt like I needed a 10th thing to finish off the list, so whatev :)

Really missin' you today, Stevie.

Love,
Mom
